Coordinating conjunctions

Some conjunctions can only normally be used in the middle of a sentence. These are called coordinating conjunctions. Occasionally you do see a sentence that begins with one of these conjunctions, but if in doubt, don't do it.

Each of these compound sentences has a coordinating conjunction in it. Can you identify the conjunction and what meaning it adds to the sentence? Click on each sentence to check.

The coordinating conjunction is and. This conjunction simply adds another idea. The two ideas in the sentence are similar in some way.
The coordinating conjunction is but. This conjunction introduces a contrasting idea.
The coordinating conjunction is or. This conjunction introduces an alternative.
The coordinating conjunction is so. This conjunction introduces a result.
