Tips for capacity

• Capacity measures the volume of liquid or how much a container holds.

• 1 litre (l) = 1000 millilitres (ml).

• Containers such as bottles, cans and cartons come in different shapes. You can't compare capacity by just looking at how tall the container is. Look for the contents label on the container.

• Lots of different containers are used for measuring liquids - syringes, medicine cups, measuring jugs, buckets, etc. Look carefully at the scale. If there are marks on a scale that are not numbered, work out what each division represents.

• Sometimes capacity is shown on a digital display, for example on a petrol pump. 16.50 litres is 16 litres and 500 millilitres or 16½ litres.
