Tips for length

• Length measures how long (length), wide (width), broad (breadth), tall (height) or deep (depth) something is.

• 1 metre (m) = 100 centimetres (cm).

• 1 metre (m) = 1000 millimetres (mm).

• 1 centimetre (cm) = 10 millimetres (mm).

• If you are using a ruler, check to see where the scale starts. There is usually a bit on the end before the first mark.

• Check the units on a tape measure. Sometimes numbering 'starts again' after each 10 or each 100. Look back along the tape to check.

• Some metric tape measures also measure in feet and inches. Check carefully along the edge of the tape to make sure that you are reading the correct units. The scales will be labelled.
