Using paragraphs

A text in four paragraphs which reads: No one lives in London any more. The city lies ten feet under water and everyone has moved out to higher ground. It's 2085 and global warming has happened. It happened far more quickly than any one imagined. In 2005, scientists predicted global disaster but it was already too late. In June 2010, an iceberg the size of the Isle of Wight broke away from the polar ice cap and began drifting towards warmer waters where it began to melt. This was the beginning. Now, seventy five years later, the Meltdown has changed our world for ever. Today, the last London families left the capital city by boat. It is unlikely that anyone will ever return.

Here is a reminder of the main points about paragraphs:

  • Paragraphs make text manageable.
  • The order of paragraphs helps the reader to understand the text.
  • Each paragraph should include a main idea.
  • The beginning of a paragraph should tell the reader what to expect. This is called the topic sentence.
  • The end of a paragraph should link to the beginning of the next paragraph.
