When hit with enough force, healthy bones can break, or fracture. Depending on the type of impact, the result might be a simple fracture. On the other hand a serious car crash is more likely to result in a comminuted fracture. Fractures can also be closed or open (also called 'compound'). A closed fracture is one in which the bone remains in its original position and does not puncture the skin, whereas in an open or compound fracture the bone punctures the skin and causes an open wound.
