How information is organised

Sometimes we have to search through large amounts of information to find information on a particular topic.

Different types of text are organised in different ways to help readers find their way around them. Here are some organisational features of texts. Select each one to find out more.

The contents page near the front of a book lists the titles of the chapters or sections.
The index page near the back of a book lists key words and topics covered in the book.
Texts that present information in A-to-Z order include dictionaries, glossaries, encyclopaedias and directories.
Menus on a web site take you to the main sections of the site.
Links in the text on a web site allow you to jump to different pages.
Headings, colours, borders, symbols and so on help you spot different items on the pages of a book or web site.
