Suppose you leave the house with £23, and come back with £16. How much have you spent?

Woman checking her purse, thinking 'How much have I spent?'
Check back. If you come home with £16 and you have spent £13 then you started with £16 + £13 = £29. But you only had £23, so this is wrong.
Check back. If you come home with £16 and you have spent £7 then you started with £16 + £7 = £23. This is correct.
This is more than you started with so it can't be right! Remember to check whether your answer makes sense.
